Build Up Your Courage Muscles
“Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord.”
Psalm 31:24
“Courage is not the absence of fear, it is the mastery of fear.” (Anonymous)
Brave souls have discovered that conquering your fear, instead of waiting for it to disappear, is key to success in any undertaking. It could be in sports, education, relationships, military operations, business or health – fearful adversity is to be expected… Often, it’s in mustering the courage to face those fears that spell the difference between failure and success.
“Be strong and courageous” was the Lord’s charge to Joshua (read Joshua 1) when he was commissioned to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land! There were gigantic warriors and great opposition to overcome – courage was required! God must have a purpose for allowing His people to face such life-threatening adversity instead of simply wiping out all their enemies (yes, I believe He could!) before they came in… Those life-threatening situations were also faith-strengthening opportunities!
Courage is needed when the task is big. God was saying “Cross the Jordan… conquer the cities… overcome the enemies… resist their gods… keep my commands… claim the promise! Yes, the enemy will be fearsome, but you must be courageous!”
“Courage is achieving your WHOLE duty despite being scared HALF to death!” (V. Atienza)
Courage is a necessary quality among true Christ-followers. Standing for righteousness while spreading the Gospel and upholding godliness in a culture that is often against Christ takes courage… a lot of courage! Courage requires practice… and your life is the exact training ground for building up the necessary “courage muscles” you will need! So bulk up! Be strong and courageous!
